Tenmile, Oregon

Population 539

Tenmile is on Highway 42 between Winston and Camas Valley. There are two routes from Roseburg to the coast and this is the way I generally go.

The name is derived from the fact that a man who lived in Happy Valley drove cattle from the valley and grazed them at the place now known as Tenmile Valley. The distance was about 10 miles, hence the name.

Tenmile boasts a restaurant

and a general store

Tenmile Store

that includes a gas station

and a post office.

I stop at the store occasionally to pick up a snack or a drink and the clerks are always friendly.

I think an interesting point is the “Jesus” sign on the store evidently proclaiming the owners faith.

You make even the ordinary drive-right-by places interesting.

Looking forward to more of your pics here. Nita

it's a rather casual Jesus, don't you think, in contrast to the rather graphic traditional kind? I love the color of the red paint. To me, it's so American. Lovely!

Nice images. I also live in Oregon (Hillsboro). Tenmile sounds familiar to me. Is there a Tenmile Lake? If so I've been there a few times.

This is an interesting set of pictures that goes to show the human side of life. And is in quite contrast to the things around it.

Amazing photos.

Adorable store, but the "Jesus" sign is odd, especially since it displayed above a "Zeus" sign.

Perhaps the place specializes in selling gods of all kinds? Or maybe they're having a BOGO sale -- buy one god, get one free?

We have a little store similar to your Tenmile store photo. Love Pepsi products.

Love the photos and your comment on the Jesus photo and the owner's faith. So interesting that the photo has many signs, symbols, words and it is one word that for me most influences the composition. Thanks for sharing your work!

:) I love that sign. In Budapest there's just no end to graffiti and it is more destructive than decorative - however, there is one that had been around as long as I've been in town at least. The scrawls in pink proclaims "Jesus loves you". I've caught glimpses of it walking or riding by on a tram and it was never observed at a bad time. Nice reminder - that yes, HE DOES!

Love these old stores although there are not many left. Great photos of a memorable institution.

Don't know about the Jesus sign...and now I'm trying to figure out how a first-century very strict Jew got to Oregon... ;-)
